It’s never too early to start planning for Halloween, or your next video game convention, am I right? As a long time Sonic the Hedgehog fan, I knew eventually I had to attempt an Amy Rose cosplay. Recently, I took on the challenge of creating an Amy Rose look using what I could pull from my own closet. The immediate inspiration was a long pink wig I just got from the TikTok shop. Considering the main colors of her outfit and aesthetic, I thought she’d be the perfect video game character to closet cosplay without breaking the bank.
How to recreate this Amy Rose closet cosplay
The key to a successful closet cosplay is a little resourcefulness. Use what you already have, or maybe even ask your friends or family members if you can borrow something. Utilize leftover materials and repurpose from other costumes you’ve worn before. Here are the key pieces I used for my Amy Rose costume.
- Red Adidas Tracksuit: Amy’s signature “modern” look includes a red dress with white trim. With those colors in mind, I grabbed my vintage red Adidas tracksuit that was originally my boyfriend’s. I love the relaxed cozy fit. The shade of red totally gives the look for Amy Rose, but also Knuckles the Echidna, another Sonic character. Try to find something red and white already in your wardrobe!
- Red Headband: Amy’s distinctive red headband is a must to pull the look together. Mine was a new Target purchase but you can use any style old or new. If you don’t have a red headband, you can always DIY one with red scrap fabric or something thrifted.
- Pink Wig: Amy’s hair and fur are bubblegum pink, so incorporating pink in this cosplay is one of the main focal points. Even though my pink wig is rather long and much longer than any version of Amy’s hair, I think it adds a fun twist to the look. No wig handy? You can totally opt for temporary pink hair dye spray here that washes out.
- Ears: While Amy’s ears are realistically that same bubblegum pink shade, I had white fox style ears from my past Rouge the Bat cosplay. So this was an easy piece to pull from my costume stash.
- Pink Makeup: To emphasize Amy’s signature pink shade, I used pink eyeshadow, blush, and glossy pink lipstick to complete the look. Voluminous false lashes also are a must to giving the makeup that extra pop. Finally, I added a bright white inner corner highlight, using waterproof white eyeliner, to emphasize that cartoony wide-eyed look.

Creating this Amy Rose closet cosplay was so fun, and has me totally inspired to recreate other characters in the future. I have a closet full of clothes and a bin full of fabric scraps, so anything is possible. Whether you’re a seasoned cosplayer or just starting out, anyone can do something like this. Have fun and let that creativity flow freely!
