DIY Daria Halloween Costume
Blazer: Banana Republic | Top: Tultex | Skirt: Socialite (similar) | Boots: Frye | Glasses: IMAX 3D
Happy Halloween! While not my most glamorous outfit, I wanted to real quickly share my DIY Daria Halloween costume this year. Most of the time I try to do something original or slightly homemade for Halloween, but sometimes I get a little too obscure. I think Daria is the perfect medium where you won’t see another Daria walking down the street or at a party, but at the same time people have a really cool connection and revelation once they figure out you’re dressed as that eccentric character from that awesome show long ago.
One year I was Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebeop, a well known sci-fi anime series, which I cut and sewed PVC fabric together to make a totally custom costume for, fit specifically for my body. But even in San Francisco, the land of techies and counter culture lovers, not a single person knew what my costume was. I was pretty surprised that not that many people knew what my costume was today because I thought Daria was pretty well known and my costume was accurate to the cartoon. But at the same time, I got several “OMG, your costume is perfect!” type remarks. In any case, this costume cost me $0 and was something sourced entirely between my closet and my boyfriend’s. He gifted me some IMAX 3D glasses which we destroyed the lenses on to make for Daria’s oversized specs. He also let me borrow this vibrant orange tee that gave the right contrast against my new green blazer. This is totally a budget-friendly costume if you’re in a pinch and looking for something different!
And here’s the skeptical look I made this morning on the walk to work, slightly unsure if people thought I was a hipster who’s trying too hard. In San Francisco, you just never know… To look the part, I kept my makeup minimal, with my everyday winged liner as the focal point. Keeping the cheeks lightly contoured with a dusty mauve blush, I stuck to just chapstick today for a plain and bare lip. Daria wasn’t at all the type for makeup, so I went with a full coverage matte foundation so no distracting redness or shininess could seep through.
So before it’s too late, I wish you a happy Halloween! I hope you enjoy lots of candy tonight. As for me? I’m enjoying a glass of wine and catching up on some blogging and GTAV!
