This past weekend I went to SacAnime and debuted a brand new cosplay: Wicked Lady from Sailor Moon. Also known as Black Lady, this anime character is probably one of my favorite villains and she has such a fun unique look perfect for cosplaying and Halloween. You can also potentially even source pieces from your own closet to recreate her costume, which is always a plus. She’s dark, edgy, feminine, and easily recognizable for any 90s anime fan. Here’s how you can recreate my Wicked Lady cosplay!
Wicked Lady is actually one of the main characters in Sailor Moon, Chibiusa, who has been transformed into a villain. In an unexpected turn of events, she turns on her family and friends under these dark powers. Her look evolves as well, going from a bright and bubbly feisty young girl to an older mysterious villainess. Her iconic pink bun pigtails grow longer and her outfit becomes more gothic, complete with accessories and makeup.
Here are all the pieces I wore for the cosplay, ready to shop. Then we will get into the wig customization part after, where the creativity really kicked in.

Wicked Lady Wig DIY
- Buy set of two 6″ foam cones from JOANN to create base for Wicked Lady’s buns.
- Using sandpaper, sanded down top edge of cone to soften shape.
- Using a box cutter, cut off 1″ from bottom of cone to shorten height.
- Blending a mix of blush pink and medium pink matte acrylic paint, paint thin coat of color on the cone. Let set for 12+ hours and paint a second coat.
- Taking my TikTok shop wig, I secured it to a wig head for styling.
- Taking 1″ vertical sections of hair, crimped the entire wig with hair crimper on medium-high temperature. Immediately comb through with a metal fine tooth comb. This method of synthetic wig crimping helps prevent tangles.
- Using hot rollers, style bangs into voluminous curled shape. Let fully cool and set, then spray with max hold hairspray.
- Style and secure hair into two high pigtail ponytails, leaving out face framing pieces around face and entire hairline. Use multiple hair ties if needed, but zip ties are preferable for super thick hair.
- Using large hot rollers, set end of pigtails into curled ends.
- Using small hot rollers in small sections to curl face framing pieces all the way to the root.
- Using pink blush or eyeshadow, take an eye makeup brush to gently brush on root shadows around hairline and parted areas. This really helps the wig appear more dimensional in daylight and photos.
- Using any trimmed hair from wig, glue sections of hair around painted foam cones. Use hairspray to give texture to buns and let set overnight.
- Using velcro tape strips, secure two small strips below each cone.
- Put on wig and attach cones close to pigtails.
- Use a small section of hair from pigtail to wrap around base of cone and secure with bobby pins.
