For my latest installment of my Sonic character cosplay series, I’m throwing it back to an old school character in the franchise many may have forgotten about. She is Princess Sally Acorn, the Freedom Fighter chipmunk from the 90’s Sonic SatAm animated series. She’s also a prominent character in Sonic the Hedgehog Archie comic books. She’s smart, confident, and fearless. That’s why I had to pay homage to this ultimate throwback strong female lead character from one of my favorite early 90s cartoons.
I wore this Sally Acorn cosplay to FAN EXPO San Francisco last year, and while she isn’t a super mainstream Sonic character, I still got a lot of props from people who recognized my character. The denim vest was a controversial piece when I shared this look on TikTok. SatAm Sally does not wear the blue vest, however, Sally in the comics does.
Here’s how you can easily replicate this Sonic SatAm Sally Acorn cosplay, using pieces found online. It wasn’t terribly expensive to put together, either. And don’t forget your power ring or Nicole!

Sally Acorn Wig
For Sally’s auburn hair, I took another synthetic wig I owned, gifted from a TikTok shop seller, which I trimmed and styled to emulate Sally’s voluminous short cut.
- First I washed the wig with fabric softener to remove the plastic shine.
- After drying and detangling, I finely crimped and combed out small sections to prevent help with longevity and prevent tangling.
- Next, I took hot rollers to curl and set sections to give volume.
- While those rollers were setting, I had sectioned off the bangs and started teasing the fringe from the front to create extra lift.
- I smoothed out the top and then set these with velcro rollers.
- After removing the hot rollers around the rest of the wig, I gentle combed through with my fingers and set everything with light hold hairspray.
- Upon releasing the bangs, I trimmed the shape into a v-shape to give the appearance of Sally’s dramatic bangs shape.
- Then I set with a strong hold hairspray to set the style and left it in small two-prong duck bill clips until the morning of the convention.

I’m a featured panelist and I’ll be hosting a panel all about streaming retro video games on Friday, June 13th at 2:45 PM. I hope to see you there!
