Most of these events also overlap with other fandoms, like comics, movies, or anime, so bring your friends and family for a fun time all around.
I’ll be adding to this list as more events are announced, so bookmark this page and check back often. Don’t forget to share it with your Bay Area and Northern California friends! You might even run into me there, in or out of cosplay!
NorCal Video Game Conventions
California Extreme
July 27-28, 2024
Hyatt Regency in Santa Clara
California Extreme is *THE* arcade gaming event of the year. It takes place over two weekend days. Seems to have a large focus on retro gaming, which is my favorite. Admission includes free play on all displayed pinball and arcade table and cabinet machines. I will probably be there Saturday this year!
SacAnime
August 30 – September 1, 2024
SAFE Credit Union Convention Center in Sacramento
When I ask other Bay Area content creators and cosplayers their favorite cons, they often say SacAnime! I have never been but this happens a few times per year. This is the summer event this year, which will feature many animators, comic artists, voice actors, and other special guests that span the anime word, gaming world, and beyond.
Sonoma Con
August 31 – September 1, 2024
Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Rosa
This will be my first year attending Sonoma Con, a newer convention with a focus on trading cards, board games, and video games! Both local Sonoma County businesses OP Comics and Games and Nostalgia Alley are involved in putting this event on.
Anime Impulse Bay Area
October 12-13, 2024
San Mateo Event Center in San Mateo
I went to Anime Impulse Bay Area last year with my sister and had a blast! They had an arcade section with DDR and other video games. Plus a robust artist alley of vendors to shop. Additionally, they had K-pop dance group performances happening all day long. And the food truck and vendor selection was outstanding. I liked how this convention had a ton of variety for every type of attendee to enjoy.
FAN EXPO San Francisco
November 29 – December 1, 2024
Moscone Center West in San Francisco
FAN EXPO San Francisco is by far the largest convention of the year, put on by Wizard World. They have the most impressive artist alley, panel speakers, and photo opp lineup by far. In terms of video game experiences, you can find a lot of merch to shop and also attend panels related to games or see tons of video game related cosplays. Last year I attended in full cosplay as Rouge the Bat from Sonic the Hedgehog. Last year there was a huge meetup for video game cosplayers. I will definitely be there again this year, but in a brand new Sonic cosplay!
Sac Gamers Expo
December 14-15, 2024
Scottish Rite Center in Sacramento
Sac Gamers Expo, formerly known as Sac Retro Gaming Expo, seems to be the premier retro gaming convention of the year in Northern California. While this year’s guest lineup isn’t yet announced, they usually have an impressive array of guests from retro gaming, anime, and comics. I missed the last few years, but I definitely want to make this year!
Additionally, San Francisco has industry events like the Gaming Developers Conference, but since that’s not really open to the public, it’s not in this list. Have a convention to suggest adding? Let me know in the comments!
In conclusion, Northern California offers a diverse and exciting array of video game conventions that cater to gamers of all interests and backgrounds. From the massive fan gatherings at TwitchCon to the intimate indie showcases at GDC, there is truly something for everyone in this region. Whether you are looking to meet fellow enthusiasts, try out new games, or learn from industry experts, these conventions provide an invaluable opportunity to celebrate the vibrant gaming community in Northern California. So mark your calendars and get ready to immerse yourself in the world of video games at one of these fantastic events!
