My birthday is coming up next month, and while I’ve been dreaming about a life changing designer purse (Proenza Schouler Limited Edition Black Ps1), I think a unique piece of decor is something that will give me much more enjoyment for decades to come. After all, your home should be a space that endlessly inspires you, right? Let me tell you a little about what I’m looking to add to my apartment decor.
Mirrored accents for utility and decor
Mirrors are not only useful tools for getting ready, but they can help bring great dimension to a room. Whether it’s a traditional one you’d use to check your makeup or outfit in, or one that’s purely for decoration, I am loving these pieces by Horchow, Anteriors, and Pottery Barn. They really can open up a room and even help bring in a little more light.
Plenty of seating options
I’ll admit it… I have a habit of draping my coat, purse, and scarf on my chaise on my way in the door home from work. Sometimes to the point where I don’t have a free seat for someone to sit in when they come over. That’s why a West Elm chair and West Elm storage bench have both made it on my apartment wish list. You can never be too prepared for company. As someone who owns little of the living room furniture in an apartment I share with two roommates, it’s about time I start accumulating some my own.
Items to please my sense of smell
Smells are what makes home, home. I use both candles and fresh flowers to wrap my room in smells. I love light floral and fruity scented candles, from brands such as Jo Malone, for spring and summer. I’ve just recently discovered a wonderful florist close to my place, so having a good vase for flowers on hand is essential. A crystal heart vase by Waterford is on my wish list, but for the time being, standard glass vases will just have to do.
Little things to tie the room together
I love the idea of placing a vase of flowers, a candle, or magazines on a lacquered tray; it just makes everything look a lot more put together and intentional. This mint and white tray by C. Wonder is the perfect piece to compliment most of my plain white, birch, and black furniture. Besides trays, I think coasters, table centerpieces, house plants, and small rugs are fantastic bang-for-buck products that will make your space feel more finished.
Updating colors with the seasons
While I love neutrals, I like adding a splash of color in decor here and there. That’s why this paint strip-esque bedding by West Elm has made it on my wishlist. It adheres to my neutral color scheme requirements while introducing some seasonally appropriate colors. When fall and winter roll around, I’ll already have plenty of black and gray bedding on hand to swap back in.
Art that inspires me right now
Art can and should be changed out frequently, if you can afford it. If you’ve already invested in nice frames, or DIY’d or refurbished thrifted ones, buying prints from Minted or Art.com are great options if you have a hard time committing to large expensive pieces. I personally love flamingos and they pretty much exude all things summer, so this framed print from West Elm is something I’ll always have space for in my home.
A piece that’s totally unexpected
A piece like the carnival marquee lamp by Vintage Marquee Lights is the ‘OMG Where Did You Get That?’ item your friends will gush over. Not only is it a statement piece, it also functions as a lamp. If you have a less limited budget, you could even string multiple letters together to form words and messages. I’ll start with my first initial for now and see where I can take it.
