I’m all about the positivity, so it’s not often I write negatively about something. But when it comes around, trust that I’ve formed a strong opinion about it. Sometimes bloggers and vloggers hype up products so much we get caught up in the excitement and run right to the store to try something new. Worst case scenario? That product was not only a waste of time, but a waste of money too! Here are the first products that come to mind when I think of totally over-hyped beauty products, most of which I regret buying.
Benefit They’re Real Mascara
I can hear my blog readers and YouTube subscribers growling already… because this a product everyone seems to loyally love. Benefit’s They’re Real Mascara just isn’t for me. The formula is too wet, causing my clean lashes to cling together. It’s also extremely stiff when it dries, leaving you with stiff lashes that hold on like a waterproof mascara. It’s extremely hard to remove, as well. The 100% pure jojoba oil I use to remove my makeup isn’t strong enough to get this entirely off, and my lashes tend to pull out in the process. It’s just not worth losing lashes over! Lastly, the plastic wand is painful to use as it often pokes my lashline when I apply close to the root. In the end, I much prefer a more dry formula mascara with a natural bristle wand for voluminous lashes. The only way I can make this mascara somewhat work is by applying it over a base layer of a different mascara; currently I’m trying it with CoverGirl’s Lash Blast. Thank goodness I only ever got a free sample of this from Sephora because this would have been a total waste of cash.
NYX Cream Blushes
Through this product I discovered I’m not a fan of cream blush, and that it tends to break me out. I was so wrapped up in the hype around these blushes, I bought two! While the shades are pretty, they are just too cumbersome to work with. The just color smudges and smears everywhere, sticking underneath your fingernails and caking up in makeup brushes. The worst part was that this product broke me out terribly along my cheekbones, making it a total fail. I have extremely sensitive and acne prone skin though, so I wasn’t totally shocked this happened. I tried giving this product a chance and it backfired. You win some, and you lose some, but I will be giving a sealed and unopened NYX Cream Blush to my sister so she can at least enjoy it.
Revlon Nearly Naked Foundation
I hate to let any products go to waste, but alas, there are some products I just have to call it quits on. This foundation is one of them. As someone with oily to combination skin and discoloration, this foundation did nothing for me. The coverage was minimal, it wore off quickly, and left my skin pretty greasy feeling only a few hours into the day. If I topped off with a full coverage powder foundation, the foundation would last a little bit longer, but that just left me with more makeup on than I’d like to wear in the first place. I’d rather go for a more full coverage foundation that’s thinner and more comfortable to wear, like Diorskin Forever or CoverGirl Outlast Stay Fabulous. I did receive this as a sample courtesy of Klout Perks, so I’m thankful for getting it for free but it just wasn’t right for my skin needs.
Maybelline Baby Lips
This is one of the single-handed most overhyped beauty products out there. I’m definitely in the minority opinion when I say this, but I tried one tube completely and I was not impressed. This product is packed full of synthetic chemicals and actually left my lips in worse condition than when they started. They left my lips even more dehydrated after application, and made my lips peel. The texture isn’t that nice either; it’s extremely slippery on the lips, so it’s not a good layering lip balm if you want to apply lip color on top of it. All things considered, I definitely don’t consider this product worth the hype, at all. There are countless other great lip balms out there, and many are natural!
End rant. Stay tuned for my Products Worth The Hype video and blog post coming up soon. There are honestly so many things I could recommend, I could probably make it into its own series. Let me know what products you think are not worth the hype so we can all take note.
