Nothing good lasts forever. BECCA Cosmetics recently announced they are closing down operations later this year, and it got me thinking about all the beauty brands of years past that have slipped away. Of these beauty brand closures some are favorites, others I never got the chance to try.
BECCA is one of my favorite high end beauty brands, so this one stings a little bit more. I’ve loved their Shimmering Skin Perfectors for years, so that’s always going to be a product I recommend. It’s actually on sale for 50% off today only during the ULTA 21 Days of Beauty. If you miss the sale today, check back on the blog because I’ll be watching future markdowns closely.
Here’s a list of beauty brand closures of the past 10 or so years I’ve been blogging. Some closures were less publicized than others. Many of these brands simply went silent on social media, their domains lapsed, and they just faded away. Some brands got acquired by other firms without subsequent updates. You may see some of their products being liquidated on Amazon, but these companies and beauty lines are no longer in operation. Do you remember any of these beauty brands and retailers?
Beauty Brand Closures in 2021
- BECCA Cosmetics
- Beauty By Popsugar
Beauty Brands Closures in Years Prior
- Jordana Cosmetics (2020)
- Clarisonic (2020)
- Play by Glossier (2020)
- Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (2018)
- Fiona Stiles Makeup (2018, brand left ULTA with no updates)
- The Estée Edit (2017)
- N.Y.C. (2016)
- Gloss48 (2015, brand went silent on social media)
- Jessie’s Girl Cosmetics (2018, company sold off with no updates)
- Julie G Nail Color (brand under Jessie’s Girl Cosmetics)
- Mei Yin Skin Care (unknown)
Some of these brands simply couldn’t keep up with beauty trends, others may have fallen under during times of economic recession. Brands like The Estée Edit and Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics were really ahead of the trends at the time, so those were closures that took me a bit by surprise.
Do you have a favorite beauty brand of years past? Do you have predictions of brands that might be the next to go? I would love to hear about it in the comments below!
I think that almost all of the recent celebrity cosmetic launches will fail. The market is flooded with celebrity gloop. Also, natural brands that are not shelf stable- in other words, get moldy, will also fail. Finally, when the next virus happens, and we wear masks again (I still wear mine in public), look for more brands to collapse.
